UCR
Abbreviation for under-color removal; the separation technique where black ink is used to replace equal amounts of cyan, magenta, and yellow ink in a neutral so as to reduce the total area coverage (TAC). Some printing presses and printers have a limited maximum TAC, above which they cannot print. UCR results in less printed ink, but may sacrifice tonal rendering in shadows. UCR (300% TAC) is typically specified for publication or SWOP (see U.S. Web Coated) standard printing. Contrast GCR.
